Remodeling the Bathroom for Accessibility and Convenience for All

You want everyone to feel welcome in your home, and it’s at the forefront of your design plan. This means that you may have to make some major changes if you have somebody in your life with unique needs for accessibility. AGA Construction Inc. is here for you. We want to help you design a place that’s accessible for all, so call us before you start your next remodel and take a look at some of our tips below.

Sizing

You don’t have to compromise on style when you remodel for greater accessibility, but you may need to compromise on sizing. In order to accommodate a wheelchair, you need room for someone to maneuver around, so sizing is an important factor for all of the fixtures in your bathroom. You may even need to do a bump-out addition to make more room, but this is something to work out with a contractor.

Shower

The shower design may vary depending on your accessibility needs, but in general, you want a shower that anyone can move into and out of with ease. A shower that has a tub attached may be more difficult to get into, unless you also have a door cut into the tub for access. Often, a large, curbless walk-in shower is a good choice. You should also consider putting a handheld shower head at a wheelchair accessible height.

Toilet

A more accessible toilet has more space around it and there are support bars nearby for someone to hang on to. The toilet should also be wheelchair height. ADA standards set guidelines for measurements in commercial use, and a contractor can help you figure out what measurements work best in your home for the space that you have.

Sink

Ease of use is something many of us don’t think about when it comes to the bathroom sink, but it can be trouble when reaching up and back is difficult, as is grasping and maneuvering the faucet handle. Depending on your needs, you may want to consider a sink that turns on automatically with infrared technology. You also want to leave clearance underneath the sink, so that a wheelchair can be positioned into place while someone washes their hands or brushes their teeth.
